This is a plain-English walkthrough of Section 2 of the Official Rules. If anything here seems to differ from the rules, the rules control.
The requirements
To enter, your business must be:
- Based in the United States
- A small business with 1 to 50 employees
- Operating for at least 12 months
- Bringing in real, demonstrable revenue
And the person applying must be:
- 18 or older
- Authorized to enter on behalf of the business
Our Terms of Service add that applicants must be legal residents of the United States, and that each business may submit only one application.
Who isn't eligible
- Employees, officers, and directors of AI Venture Holdings LLC, and their immediate family members
- Businesses that don't meet the requirements above
Common questions
I'm a solo owner with no employees. Can I apply?
The rules call for 1 to 50 employees, and they don't spell out how owners, contractors, or seasonal staff are counted. Describe exactly who works in the business, including yourself, in your application, and email us if you want to check before applying.
We just passed our first anniversary. Is that enough?
The rules require at least 12 months of operating history. If you've reached that, you meet this requirement.
What counts as demonstrable revenue?
Real sales from real customers. This contest is not for pre-revenue startups or idea-stage companies. If you're selected as a finalist or winner, expect to be asked to back up what you told us.
Can an agency or consultancy apply?
Yes, if it meets the requirements and genuinely needs help. The contest isn't for businesses looking to resell the services they'd receive.
I own two businesses. Can I apply for both?
Each business may apply once. If both businesses meet every requirement, each could submit its own application, but answer for each one separately and honestly.
My business is doing fine. Can I still apply?
The contest is built for businesses that need a rescue. If you tell us in the application that you're doing fine and just curious, you won't be entered. You're still welcome to read this knowledge base.
I'm outside the US. Can I apply?
Not for this contest. The rules limit it to US-based businesses. The contest is also void where prohibited by law.
